With news out of the nation’s capitol in Mar a Lago, Florida, becoming more unbelievable by the day, why to take a tasteful trip to Italy? Thinking about the incredible wines I have for you tomorrow is a heckuva lot more pleasant than having to watch the implosion of our billionaire-in-chief. Although I do take certain pleasure in each new revelation, I have to admit, for no other reason than the end of this chapter of our national electoral nightmare appears ever closer. Note I said chapter, not book.
So you would be well advised to take a well deserved mental break and indulge in some of Italy’s greatest sensual pleasures. As you are well aware the Italians are pretty good at this whole food and wine thing, having several centuries to hone their very indulgent skill set. Sangiovese as grown in the rolling hills of Tuscany that are scattered with stone farmhouses and groves of ancient olive trees, has a character and satisfaction quotient that simply can’t be matched anywhere else in the world for these prices. Again the reason you don’t see domestic sangiovese here at VINO. I mean, why would I recommend you buy American made sangiovese that costs more but doesn’t offer near the satisfaction? As Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye sang so well, “Ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby.” How real? This real….

–2013 VILLA ANTINORI Toscana Rosso $19.95…90+ pts-Wine Advocate
–2013 NOZZOLE Chianti Classico Riserva $21.95…93 pts-Vinous: “Absolutely delicious. Ample and broad on the palate, the 2013 offers striking depth and texture throughout. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol and cloves give the 2013 its dark, enveloping personality. Drink this virile, brooding Riserva over the next handful of years.”
And we haven’t even gotten to “la dolce vita” of Bonus Land…
Bonus #1-2012 CROCIANI Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva $23.95….I had this new-to-PDX sangiovese at a trade tasting recently and was blown away at the quality for the $$. Dark and powerful, loaded with character and flavor, a Riserva level wine for less than most producers regular bottlings!
Bonus #2-2013 FELSINA Chianti Classico Riserva $25.95… 91 pts-Vinous; 91 pts-Wine Advocate; 92 pts-Wine Spectator: “Rich and sumptuous, boasting pure flavors of cherry and raspberry, matched to a juicy texture. There are plenty of tannins neatly folded into the overall structure, with hints of mineral and tea on the long, expansive finish. Best from 2017 through 2024. #40 in 2016 Top 100 Wines.”
Bonus #3-2009 SIRO PACENTI Brunello di Montalcino “Pelagrilli” $48.95…91 pts-Wine Advocate; 92 pts-Vinous: “A drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Sweet red cherries, plums, smoke, licorice and spices flesh out in a supple, resonant Brunello loaded with class. The style is as always rich and fruit-driven, while all the elements are in balance. The pedigree of this site and Giancarlo Pacenti’s pure skill are evident. This is a great showing.”
I feel better about my future prospects just typing those wines into this email! Let the good feeling wash over you tomorrow anytime between 4:30-8:00 by having your Friday evening passeggiata end at the doors of VINO. The cost for this Tuscan tour is just ten dollars for the first five wines (don’t forget to show your ACLU card for a $2 discount during the month of February!) and a bit more will secure even more Bonus well being.
