Red Mountain Revelation: 2014 HELIOTERRA Mourvedre

2014 HELIOTERRA Mourvedre "Red Mountain"
$31.95 bottle/ $161.00 half case/$305.00 case

Over my years in wine retail literally thousands of  Washington wines have crossed my palate, but the number of times I’ve tasted one that has truly made me go (in a very approving way) “Holy cow, what in the h*ll is going on here?” could probably be counted on less than ten fingers. Not that I’m some wine snob, but I usually know what to expect from Washington red, you know? Then winemaker Anne Hubatch came by with the 2014 vintage of her Red Mountain appellation Mourvedre and I was floored. This is simply a stunner. Complex, full-bodied and full-flavored. Darkly colored, with tiers of invigorating aromas and flavors of ripe macerated blackberries, fresh pepper, herbes de Provence, handfuls of damp earth, and beautiful integration of tannins and acidity that keep it from being heavy or plodding. It has this incredible energy that really made my palate come alive. This is rare for me with wine from anywhere, not just Washington. This is a brilliantly made wine, sublime now and it will be fascinating to follow its development over the years. I found myself thinking about it for days afterward, and knew it had to be shared. What an interesting treat, and thank you, Anne!
