Produttori Rising: 2012 Produttori del Barbaresco!!

2012 PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO Barbaresco
$34.95 bottle/ $188.00 half-case/ $330.00 case

The Produttori co-op is unquestionably one of Italy’s greatest wine producers. Year after year they are absolute benchmarks of quality in Barbaresco. Adding to the allure of this 2012 is that in this vintage that they decided that the Riserva wines, of which they produce eight or so single-vineyard bottlings, weren’t up to their usual standards, even though 2012 was considered an above average Piedmont vintage. So what did the fanatical head of Produttori, Aldo Vacca, do? He declassified all of their Riserva wines into this normale bottling, and the result is one the finest Produttori normale Barbaresco I have ever tasted. And I’ve had these wines going back 25+ years. This beauty is fabulous now with a little air, and will easily age for 5-10+ years. I had it open for 3 days at home, and on day 3, with about 2” left in the bottle, it finally revealed all of its power and intensity. Not cheap, but for world class wine of this caliber from this level of producer, it is a great value. And compared to other $35-$60 bottles of domestic produce, it blows them away! For further validation, read on…
“A big, powerful wine, the 2012 Barbaresco hits the palate with surprising depth allied to nervous tannins that are going to need time to soften. Tobacco, smoke, licorice, menthol, game and a host of dark, ferrous notes give the wine much of its virile personality. The 2012 is not as finessed as some recent vintages, yet it offers considerable potential for the future. Most importantly, it is a terrific value at a time when well-priced Barbaresco is increasingly hard to find. In 2012, the Produttori did not bottle their Riservas. When that happens, the straight Barbaresco is often an overachiever. That is certainly the case here, as the 2012 offers outstanding quality for the money, with plenty of potential for the future. I can’t think of too many wines that deliver this much pleasure and value. 92 points.” –Antonio Galloni/Vinous

“The 2012 Barbaresco is a beautifully ripe and generous expression that exudes dark layers of black fruit, smoke, leather, grilled herb and Teriyaki smoke. This edition feels a bit thicker and denser compared to past vintages but Produttori’s magic truly comes through the longer the wine ages. Given the fleshiness that will potentially evolve with time, this wine is geared up for a prolonged cellar life. 93 points.” –Monica Larner/Wine Advocate

“A pretty red, boasting floral, strawberry and raspberry flavors, accented by tobacco and underbrush notes. The tannins are firm yet well-integrated, creating a balanced impression. Best from 2017 through 2027. 93 points.” –Wine Spectator
