Mont Gras “Antu” Syrah: as good as it gets!

2012 MONT GRAS "Antu" Syrah
$19.95 bottle/ $192.00 case

montWhen we carried the previous locally available release of this Chilean beauty, the 2009 “Antu” Syrah, I wrote that it was one of, if not the, best South American Syrahs I’ve had. At any price. Any cheaper and they tend to be flabby fruit bombs; any more and all you taste is vanilla from the new oak. Like the ’09, this 2012 Syrah actually tastes like the grape Syrah, which seems redundant but I’m guessing you know what I mean. Deeply layered, it boasts copious amounts of blackberries, ripe raspberry, black pepper, minerals, roast meats and bacon fat, all of which burst forth yet are impeccably balanced with the integrated tannin and acid structure. This is a superbly made new world syrah that has real affinity with great Rhone Valley syrah from France. This blending of Old World and New is not an easy trick to pull off, believe me. I’d put it a notch above the ’09 I loved so much, and it is going to drink well and improve for 5-10 more years.
Here’s the love from The Wine Spectator: “Ripe and rich, with smoky notes to the dried raspberry and dark plum flavors. Meat accents linger on the cream- and chocolate-filled finish. A harmonious style that finely balances the fruit and savory components. Drink now through 2019. 91 points.”
