Champagne Dreams: nv CHARLES HEIDSIECK Brut Reserve!

nv CHARLES HEIDSIECK Brut Reserve Champagne
$44.95 bottle/ $428.00 case

I meant to have this in this week’s E-Special offering, but somehow totally forgot. In the vein of better late than never, and assuming you have the good sense to be a fan of classic French Champagne, this is a deal not to be missed (not to mention it is my new house bubbly)! Charles Heidsieck is classic, medium sized wine house in the town of Reims founded in 1851 . Their non-vinatge cuvée (n/v) is considered to be among the finest examples of the surprisingly difficult art of blending many different vintages of Champagne to maintain a “house style”. Here’s what author Peter Liem had to say in his new and fascinating book about Champagne and its producers (aptly titled “Champagne” and a great read): One of the finest non-vintage Champagnes on the market, and a masterpiece of blending. It’s also a tremnedou value considering that 40 percent of is blend is composed of reserve wines averaging ten years of age.” The Heidsieck also gets regular love from the wine press(I.e. 92 points-Wine Spectator; 91 points-Vinous), and is a complex, incredibly satisfying bottle of the “real stuff”. The reason it merits mention here is that, no, it isn’t cheap, but for Champagne it totally delivers the goods, plus til the end of January it is on a very deep discount. Next month this beauty will run you $65 a bottle a bottle, so to be able to save $20 a bottle on classic Champagne is what we call a rather attractive buying opportunity. This price ends shortly, and orders need to be in by Monday at the latest.
Blend: one third each pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot meunier
~~My notes: “Rich, smoothly elegant texture; creamy, very fine bubbles. Aromas and flavors of citrus, honey, yeasty/toasted brioche, floral spice notes. Medium+ body, long, lively, and intense on the finish. Very complete.”
