2016 BUCKMAN WINE CO. Pinot Noir

2016 BUCKMAN WINE CO. Pinot Noir "Willamette Valley"
$17.95 bottle/ $175.00 case

With the onset of Oregon’s grape harvest comes the annual release of the one wine I look forward to more than any other (parental pride talking here), that being the newest release of our store label pinot, the 2016 BUCKMAN WINE CO. Pinot Noir “Willamette Valley”. And as it has thankfully been for all 5(!!) years of Buckman now I can heartily recommend your indulgence.

Made for us by the incredibly talented and wonderfully accommodating Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker of Boedecker Cellars in northwest Portland, the ’16 Buckman displays what is always the hallmark of Boedecker’s pinots, a classic wild strawberry, blueberry, cinnamon spice, herbes de Provence, with edgings of NW forest moss. This billows effortlessly from the glass, with incredibly appealing aromatics and flavors. Beautifully ripe and rich, made of about a third each Finnigan Hill, Cherry Grove, and Chehalem Mountain vineyards, this is dark in the glass (as many ‘16s will be) and plush and seamless on the palate. It’s only after you get past the entry that those sneaky tannins and brisk acids start to cut through, balancing the richness of the fruit, which is what I always aim for with the Buckman. The fruit is always coming on, and the longer it stands open the layers of intensity slowly reveal themselves. It finishes long and velvety smooth, showing remarkable balance of fruit/tannin/acid.

Still so young and vibrant, this shows a very youthful, upfront appeal that’s hard to say no to, but I know from experience this is going to soar given a few months (even years!) in bottle.  This may be one of the most complete Buckmans yet, with everything that appeals to lovers of classic Oregon pinot, yet due to the warm ’16 harvest has plenty of stuffing for those who might normally shy away from pinot noir. I’m obviously digging this in a big way, and can’t wait to take a bottle home tomorrow, grill some wild caught salmon, and let the food and wine love flow!

2016 BUCKMAN WINE COMPANY {Pinot Noir “Willamette Valley”
$17.95 bottle/ $175.00 case*

*as always very limited amounts are available…this year just 70 cases. I’ve found that keeping it to small lots ensures this will always meet my somewhat, um, picky standards for what I’ll put my name behind. Trying to be as objective as possible, I will tell you this is a fabulous value in the generally overpriced world of Oregon pinot and is as good as anyone’s $20-$30 Willamette Valley bottling.
